Description

Mrs. Cookson at her domestic battle-station best takes her lower-middle McCabe family from a wedding and WW II air raid to a murder trial and final pairing some two decades later. Seeing it through is Annie, who’s forced to marry George McCabe, “the dimmest bloke on the street” (Mrs. Cookson specializes in one-shot pregnancies). But George is a good sort and Annie finds she loves him – after four children, growing financial security, and a final clarification of George’s friendship with a homosexual. But then, Annie’s beloved no-good son Rance kicks Da (George) to his death; the matter is hushed up even by witness Alan, fourteen years younger than Annie but in love with her; Rance becomes more rancid, deals in drugs, and makes it a pair by killing Annie. Ugly duckling Tishy sweeps up the pieces and Alan. With everyone blurting out the plenty on their minds in dead center patois – this is top-quality ginger beer for the following. (Kirkus Reviews)
